Working capacity vs advertised grain capacity

A grain label alone is not enough for a buying decision. Compare your calculated requirement with a capacity rating tied to a salt dose, then separately check flow and water chemistry.

A concrete comparison

The Whirlpool WHES40 manual, page 3, lists 17,300 grains at 3.4 lb of salt, 31,600 at 9 lb, and 40,000 at 15.5 lb. These ratings describe that model. They do not establish SpringWell performance.

For our 24,000-grain worked scenario, the lowest listed WHES40 capacity is 6,700 grains below the requirement. The middle rating is 7,600 above it. That is a numerical comparison, not a recommendation or an instruction to change controller settings: the manual describes automatic variable salt dosing.

Why the largest number can mislead

Calculated grains per pound for those three data points are about 5,088, 3,511 and 2,581. Higher capacity at a larger salt dose does not necessarily mean better salt efficiency. These ratios are arithmetic from published ratings, not predictions of household performance.

Before you buy

Our seven-plus-one-day scenario is a planning choice. A different regeneration interval can change the required capacity. Read the complete method or inspect the catalog evidence.
