Water softener sizing: worked household examples
These scenarios show the arithmetic behind the calculator. They are not claims about average households or specific products. All examples assume no dissolved iron. Manganese is excluded.
Using the published HomeWater101 sizing convention, estimated use is 75 gallons/person/day and the treatment interval is seven days. Our site shows one additional reserve day separately. It is not a universal manufacturer requirement.
| Scenario | Gal/day | GPG | Daily load | 7 days | Reserve | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people, estimated use | 150 | 10 | 1,500 | 10,500 | 1,500 | 12,000 |
| 4 people, estimated use | 300 | 10 | 3,000 | 21,000 | 3,000 | 24,000 |
| 4 people, measured use | 180 | 10 | 1,800 | 12,600 | 1,800 | 14,400 |
| 4 people, harder water | 300 | 20 | 6,000 | 42,000 | 6,000 | 48,000 |
What these comparisons tell you
Replacing the four-person estimate with 180 measured gallons reduces the scenario requirement by 9,600 grains, or 40%. Doubling hardness at the same daily use doubles the load. Changing bathrooms alone does neither: bathrooms only screen product flow ranges.
Use your own household data
Measure or estimate only water that will pass through the softener. Exclude bypassed irrigation. With a daily-use override, household count no longer determines gallons. Compare the resulting requirement with rated capacity at an identified salt dose—not just an advertised grain label.
A result of 24,000 grains does not identify a universally correct “24,000-grain softener.” Reserve, regeneration timing, service flow and chemistry still require review.
